Δημήτρης Κουρέτας, ο επιστήμονας πίσω από την ανακάλυψη

Ο Δημήτρης Κουρέτας γεννήθηκε στα Προσφυγικά της Πάτρας το 1962. Σπούδασε Φαρμακευτική στην Πάτρα και στη συνέχεια πήρε το διδακτορικό του στη Βιοχημεία από το Χημικό Τμήμα του Α.Π.Θ. Από το 1990-1992 εργάστηκε ως ερευνητής στην Ιατρική Σχολή του Harvard στη Βοστώνη. Σήμερα είναι Καθηγητής Φυσιολογίας Ζωικών Οργανισμών στο τμήμα Βιοχημείας- Βιοτεχνολογίας του Πανεπιστημίου Θεσσαλίας και ζει στη Λάρισα. Ερευνητικά εργάζεται στον τομέα της μελέτης των μηχανισμών αλληλεπιδράσεων διατροφικών στοιχείων με τον οργανισμό σε μοριακό επίπεδο, ειδικά σε περιπτώσεις άσκησης. Έχει δημοσιεύσει πάνω από 60 άρθρα σε διεθνή έγκυρα περιοδικά. Είναι εμπειρογνώμονας στην ΕΕ στην τεχνολογική πλατφόρμα ‘ Food for life’ για την 2007-2013.
Έχει λάβει μέρος σε δεκάδες μαραθωνίους και υπερμαραθωνίους τρεξίματος και κολύμβησης. Το 2007 κολύμπησε τον διεθνή διάπλου της λίμνης Τριχωνίδας 16 χιλιόμετρα σε 5 ώρες και 59 λεπτά. Είναι παντρεμένος με την Χαριτίνη Νέπκα, ιατρό κυτταρολόγο, μαραθωνοδρόμο και μία κόρη την Αναστασία 14 ετών παίκτρια υδατοσφαίρισης στον Ναυτικό Όμιλο Λάρισας.

PENED 2003 ‘Identification and assessment of biological active chemical compounds in Greek wines and respective Greek grape varieties (VITIS VINIFERA)- Investigation of their roles as chemopreventive compounds’ (completed).
EYREKA 2006-2008 ‘Exploitation of byproducts from tomato paste industry and processing of fruits through the regain of bioactive compounds of high added value’. Budget: 350000 euros.
INTERNATIONAL COLLABORATION in the context of Thrace’s PEP 2006-2008 ‘Incorporation of bioactive plant extracts in the production and certification of biofunctional milk products of high added value’. Budget 400000 euros.
‘Nutritional value and production of high quality biofunctional milk products by adding plant extracts enriched in antioxidants (budget: 260000 euros) From the grant Innovation poles of GSRT.

Professional Experience
2008-today: Laboratory of nutritional intervention of elite athletes . Every year 600-700 athletes from different sports are evaluated with molecular biology based tests and their nutritional supplements are designed in a personal basis. A private spin-off company is run by me which is preparing personalized functional foods.
